If youre talking about stepping on the brake to release the shift lever from park to reverse. This is the brake shift interlock. I t located on the steering column. It is either on top of the column just a little farther back then your cluster. I t really eay to replace. Ford has had alot of problems with this.

Jeep Compass or Honda Element or Other?

That would be the torque convertor.

How do I know if my 2001 Mazda Millenia has a keyless entry system?

It is designed to slip when a given amount of resistence is achieved,
It doesn't "release" the tranny like a clutch system does, but only doesn't power over the friction of the brake pads.
