The car was bought used so I have limited paperwork. Some invoices from the dealer just say Jeep Wrangler, some invoices from other places say "AMC/Jeep Wranger/TJ 4x4 6-242ci 4.0L". Can I assume this is accurate and the Jeep is a TJ body type?

Both answers are incorrect. The CJ is the narrow wheel base Jeep built before 1987. The models between '87 and '95 are the YJs (most commonly known as the square headlight Jeeps). The TJ was built from 1997-2006 and has round headlights as well as many other advances. 2007 models are known as the JK. Note: if it says AMC, it is NOT a TJ. The TJ wasn't built until after Chrysler bought Jeep.I believe CJ and YJ have round headlights and the TJ has square ones.

The TJ Wranlgers are old school 80's/90's models they use square headlights and the front axle is mounted with leaf springs. the YJ Wranglers are Current type models and are more of a throwback to the old CJ's in styling with round headlights up front and they use a 4-link coilover suspension setup for the front axle. Moose is 100% correct - another easy way to tell TJ's apart from YJ's is to take a look at the suspension - leaf springs its a YJ or CJ - coil springs its a TJ. However this only applies to what the Jeep left the factory with - if it has been lifted or had suspension modifications then anything is possible.I don't know what those first couple of posters were smoking but Moose gave you the best info.

The easiest and quickest way to tell what model it is is to call a dealer and give them the VIN number. With that they can tell you what model it is and what it left the factory with as far as engine, tranny, diffs, etc. That way you'll also get a good idea of how much it has been modified.
