mine is in need of a top-off...what kind does it take? don't just say ATF...doesn't trans. fluid come in dot 2 and dot 3 and such? or is that brake fluid...please help! thanks.

I own a transmission shop, and work on many of these transmissions. The best fluid to use is Dexron -3 with mercon. We use this in most all vehicles now. The only exception would be some of the older vehicles that doesn't require the mercon.The proper way to check your fluid is: Run the vehicle until it is hot as in you just drove 20 miles. Park on level ground, and place the transmission in park. Check the fluid level at least 5-7 times before you add any fluid. When looking at the dipstick, you may get two readings, as in read both sides of the stick. Go by the lowest reading on the stick. Reason is; when you remove the stick it drags some fluid back up the fill tube, and will give you a false reading on one side of the stick. If the level is between the XXXX on the stick as in anywhere on the stick below the top X, then you are low. Be cautious about how much you put into the transmission as you don't want to over fill it. If you do, you will have to hand pump it back out the fill tube. Fluid expands as it gets hot, so if you check it and its in the XXXX area, it may not be low at all. If you are having to put fluid in it, then it would be wise to determine why, and just where it is going to. If the pan is leaking, tighten the pan bolts about a 1/4 of a turn, and no more, or you will break the gasket.

Any trans fluid that is Dextron will work.There was no Dextron 3 or 4 or what ever when the TH350 was made.
All dextron fluids are compatible with the blend that came out previously, as in, 4 will work for 3....but it doesn't work in reverse, as in, 3 will not work for 4.
DOT 3 or 4 refers to the boiling point of brake fluid.
It usally says on the Tramsmission dip stick what kind of fluid to use. Dextron III is the right fluid to use.
