Serious decking will allow common performance upgrades to be utilized. Hot Rod mag had a series on this. Expect to spend a grand on block prep to bolt on new heads and intake.New crate motors blow this idea away. If that engine runs good just change the cam timing gears and chain for more advanced cam timing with a good center sqirt holley carb on the stock manifold. Don't ask it to go over 5500 rpm. If carefully done it will deliver 500 ftlb. of tourqe at 4500 rpm! A good delivery of power for the extra 250lbs. of weight-(over the heaviest smallblock). Don't try this in a car. A light 3/4 ton truck thats got a 55-65 weight balance with a solid torque converter/turbo 400 trans and disc brakes is the only sane way to proceed. Remember to build the octane of your fuel and add a lead substitute.(98 octane at a minimum with advanced cam timing and a quick advancing distributor!).What do you whink of 1995 range rovers.?
yes it would be nice these blocks are always being look for by drag racersYour not going to get the same HP as you could from a short deck motor , but you could still get some good power for the money . Its something to put in a hot rod pick up or a cheap car , but not a nice vette or older camaro .

you can do alot with it, you can do a longer stroke same deck height with same length rods, use same stroke with longer rods, high comp pistons, you have fairly unlimited options on what can be done. just do the math and talk to your machine shop about those options.just depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to be.Oil pump for 01 ford f350 7.3 liter?

i don't agree that you can't get the same power as you could out of short deck. i have a '72 454 which is the sister engine to the 427, it is also a tall deck. i took it to a machine shop and got it bored and line honed and a .010 deck. its now a 472 ci. i stuffed in the right components after doing some homework and put in a '68 firebird which does low 10's in the quarter. i rebuilt the engine my self it cost me approximately $5800. i saved on labor doing it myself and it dyno'd at 648hp and 679lb. ft. of torque. hope this helps. do it yourself if you can.good lucki might be a mopar sorta guy but back in the day 5 or so years ago i helped a guy with a mud racer and now drives monster trucks for live nation...and back before he ran merlin blocks he ran tall deck 427's turned to 540's with about 12.5 to 1 compression a littlefield blower and methonal.well that made about 1300-1400 horse power...i'm guessing this is out of your budget...but what i am saying is if you talk to the right people and get the right info you can make big power with a tall deck engine.you need to check the internet and talk to the people at OHIO CRANKSHAFT...hint hint
