I don't know if you have the 2.5 or the 3.5SE/SL. With the Altima, it's generally considered as a "smooth" riding vehicle in stock form. To get an "almost" stock ride, you'll have to swap your struts to Tokico Illuminas ($400 well spent) and some H&R springs. Set the shocks to 4F/3R damping and it should be pretty darned close. The swap will also lower your car about 1.3" generally. You can also do just the strut swap and not worry about the springs. I've swapped suspensions on my friend's altima and now she's hooked. It's currently on an H&R/Illumina setup with 3F/3R damping.
You better stick with Nissan brand suspension, the kind that fits in a 2002 Altima. The only other thing you can do for a smoother ride than the car came with originally, would be to install aftermarket shocks/struts. Cheap ones will make your ride stiffer or otherwise worse (than original new condition). Manually adjustable ones like Koni are very pricy, but allow you to custom tailor your rebound stiffness.
