How do you rate the Beetle soft top?

Stainless Steel does not bear loads very well.
It has a low shear point as opposed to Grade 8 steel.

Try harder to find the right grade bolts.

I use stainless steel throughout all of my show cars and drag cars for many reasons. Stainless steel bolts come in different grades. I have been using bolts from Rockford for many years and have always been pleased with the way they perform. Grade 8, have a shear strength of about 165'000 psi min, while ss aircraft styles start at around 176'000 to over 200'000. My catalog doesn't have the cross reference I would like it to have to correctly identify your particular bolt. But to answer the second part of your question, yes, stainless steel is usually a very good choice. But remember, there is a lot more to nuts and bolts than just the grades. Sometimes tensile strength is needed over shear. Sometimes you may want a softer bolt. My best effort to answer the first part is, if that is what came with it from the factory, than your should be able to safely replace it with one of the same value. But I would look at what caused it to break, you may have problems elsewhere as well.
