1999 Camaro SS, 5.7l V8, LS1 350. Taking into consideration that twin turbos are out of the discussion beacaue of the cost, which one is best? Ive heard great things about both with this engine. Which one is more affordable? Are the gains similar? Thanks in advance for the advice!

I like turbos It takes some of the energy lost in the exaust, and puts it to use. If set up the right way, it can boost MPG. Some take time to spool up. You don't have to mess with plumbing the exaust, so it is easier and cheeper.

Depending on the turbo's setup, the costs are very similar. The gains can be similar, but it all depends on the setup. I've seen installed ProChargers costing about $7500, and twin turbo setups costing about $8500. Also, there are two types of turbo setups now. Everyone knows the under-the-hood setup, but STS has developed a rear-mounted turbo setup. The gains aren't as good as the under-the-hood setup, but it costs a lot less. I've seen STS turbos installed for under $4000.
I'd suggest researching the different types of turbos and superchargers, then research some potential shops for the install. I know of some shops in the Chicago/Northern Indiana area, but have no idea where you are located, so my suggestions won't help much.

Vortech supercharger...great power, low tech engineering...a turbo charger only kicks in after the highpoint of the max rpm .plus if not properly tuned and installed ...can make the car slower once it tops off...or even before..this is known as turbo lag...a supercharger is on all the time.I admire Lexus reliability, but what said of design?
turbo creates more horse but to get your engine to handle it will cost WAY TO MUCH. i have a 97 z-28 i would go with the supercharger all the way!More Questions & Answers ...
