With out a little more information its hard to tell. What is the year and model of the car? If the car its newer then a 2000 model year it will have a stage 2 system. Were the air bags deployed and the replaced? Sometimes the light will trigger if the seat belt locked and the air bag did not even deploy. The later model Fords have a use once seat belt buckle. There is a gas charge in the buckle end that triggers on impact to hold you in place. You can usually tell if it has been triggered by looking at the accoridian part of the buckle near where it bolts to the car. The accorian part of the plastic will be deformed and look like its sucked in. If that is the case you will need to replace the buckle or "retractors" on what ever seat had a passenger in it at the time. They run about $80 or so from a dealer and you will need the color code off the door of the car so the new ones will match the interior. he air bag light will usually flash a fault code. start the car and count the number of times the light flashes. Like it might flash 3 times then pause a little and flash 4 more times. That is a code 34 these codes can be looked up on line. It will flash this sequence a few times then just stay on. I run a rental fleet and we have had everything from a bumper sensor go bad, loose horn assemblys and the seat belt buckles. You are going to have to take it to a shop with the capabilities to attatch a scan tool to read and clear the code that is set. the airbag lite comes on either after an accident that was severe enough to deploy the airbags, or if there is an electrical problem in the sytem. your airbags will not deploy if you hit a bump in the road. Most of the time the affected airbag(one with the problem) may not deploy in an accident, but the rest should work; unless the problem is in the main airbag module. Please take your vehicle to your local Ford dealer, NOT a repair shop, ONLY your dealer. That is the only place that can correctly diagonse and fix the problem you are having. I own a repair facility and I will not attempt to work on any airbag system. I refer my customers on this problem to take it only to a dealer.The only way to get the light off is to bring it in for service preferably at the Ford dealer as someone suggested as they are more informed on the air bag system than anyone else... (plus the newer systems are harder to diagnose)
The system , once the air bag light is on (It will actually flash for a bit before staying on, is supposed to turn off the complete system so nothing will fire in the event of a problem that may set off the airbag (such as someone said being scared it would go off goign down the highway)

But nope... needs to be scanned to be turned off, but when they come on, there is a reason why it comes on.. if you were trying to turn off the chime.. it's time to fess up however to the dealer. (as they will tell you how to turn off the chime when not wearing your belts)
