it's been awhile since I worked on a GM, but if the timing chain broke, it would not turn the cam sensor sending the signal to fire the coil pack.

Don't believe the cam has anything to do with coil pack it has to do with timing coil pack produces electricity to fire plugs the cam turns the distributor timing the coil gets it's power from the battery

In theory,the coils could still fire while cranking with a broken timing chain.
