With proper maintenance, an automatic can last a long time, but generally not too much longer than 250,000 miles... although some have lasted much longer. As with all vehicles, the real answer lies with how the vehicle was driven and how it was maintained... if you mash the accelerator at every light and never replace the tranny fluid, then expect the thing to expire prematurely... With a manual, adjust the clutch when needed and drive sensibly and it could outlast the rest of the vehicle... If you have an automatic, you can always have an analysis done on the transmission fluid to see what could possibly go wrong in the near future !Can someone help me find this?
Manuals ar almost forever, specially the NV4500.Autos can be forever too, but they relay on your driving skills and maintenance. They have less towing capacity than manuals too, about 2/3. All my Dodge Trucks had been auto, my 1500 (1/2TON) gas '99 has almost 200K kilometers when it broke, fortunately it was in another hands; the 2001 2500 (3/4TON) has almost 200K kilometers and is still going. The 2005 3500 (1TON) only has 33K miles and nothing wrong so far.

should have bought a power stroke and you wouldn't have to worry about how you drive it or what it pulls. i got three of them, t5heir all automatics, 99 02 04, they all stay hooked to a three car wedge trailers and have had to replace one of them at 375,000.
