I am getting it to turn over but I am not getting ony poping. It just doesn't sound like it is trying I replaced the flat half moon shaped thingy in the distributor. cant for the life of me remember what it is called! Anyone in the Williamsport Maryland area that can give me a hand with an old 454 it would be appreciated!

Make sure your timing is correct in the first place. A misplaced distributor will cause your timing to be WAY off! That thing inside your distributor is called a rotor, with the piece of metal on one end...If you know the distributor is on correctly, get a spark plug from somewhere, put it in one of your plug wires, and turn the engine over while holding the thread part against a good ground. If you have spark, then you may want to check your wire placement.

pull off a spark plug wire and position it close to the end of the plug ,have someone crank the engine, if your getting spark you will be able to see the spark "jump" from the wire to the plug, works better when its dark to see the sparkhow old is the 454? does it have an ignition resister?
if no spark check resister.
to see if it is firing try grounding one end of the spark plug to the car metal then turning over the engine(startup) unless the spark plug is grounded on the car it will not spark even if its a new plug hope this helps...if not the plug could be water in the gas if the car has sat even for the smallest amount of time ..much luck
