What does consumer report say about the '03 VW Jetta?

Question:
Are there any reports of mechanical failure or trouble with the sensors? Is this a typical quality made VW?

Answers:

where is the air temperature sensor located at on a 2001 gmc sierra?

I have an '03 Jetta.
About around 4000 miles the Check Engine Light came on. I took it in to be fixed and it came right back on about 500 miles later. I've had it "fixed" by VW three times now. It always comes back on.
2 months ago I turned my heated seats on and it burnt me! Not bad, but got really hot and got my attention. I called VW the next day, they entered my VIN and told me there was a recall on the driver side heated seat. And also on the rear door locks. I'm not sure why they never contacted me to tell me about it.
Other than the CEL always being on, it's been a very reliable car for me. Then again, it only has 27k miles on it (very very low mileage for it's age).

The '03 Jetta is on CR's "Used Cars to Avoid" list. I know this because I just bought an '05 Jetta and did the research. The "much worse than average" reliability items are, as I recall, "body integrity," "engine electronics" and "interior electrics." Sensors would fall under "engine electronics." Unfortunately, CR is vague about specific items covered by their general categories.

For example, "body integrity" may cover the tendency for Jetta's and Golf's to lose the small plastic vents under the bumper. I've seen many with one or both lost. I lost one, managed to recover it and now have them all secured to the body with wire.

Most Public Libraries have back issues of CR you can reference. Comsumer Reports has an on-line edition, some information is available by subsciption only though. In addition there are a good number of VW specific forums available on the Internet.

im looking for rims on my suv can you help me?

Personally, I considered the Lexus IS300, the Saab 9-3 and the Jetta. An 03 IS300, an 03 9-3 and an 05 Jetta were about the same price. I was unable to find a good IS300 in the time available. The 9-3 drove well but had a cheap feeling interior. The VW has a high quality feel to it and drives good. The car I purchased is still under warranty, so I have the option of purchasing an extended warranty until it expires.

BMW...what?

I decided to ignore CR's warning. Had reliability records been a controlling factor, I'd have bought one of the high mileage IS300's available to me. The Lexus is on CRs list of used cars to consider.
