Tonight on my way home from work, I noticed that in my 1998 ford explorer, the 4WD and 4WDL lights would flash 4 times and then go out for about 2 minutes. They would then flash again. I didn't try putting it in 4 wheel drive because I know this means there is a problem of some sort. Anyone know what this means?

You could try just taking it to a parts store like auto value ect. most of them will scan it for free.
