First off, the 305 isn't Chevy's crown achievement. I don't remember the 305 coming stock with a 4 BBL carb. But to answer your question, Holley and Edelbrock are the most popular aftermarket carbs but I personally like the Rochester Quadrajet and the Carter AFB competition series Quad.

I wouldn't worry too much about the carb if your looking for performance. The 305 is not an engine worth mentioning as far as racing etc. For a daily driver to get you to an from work, they're good. Edelbrock would be what I would go with.

The quadrajet carb you have is a good unit. Why not have it rebuilt by a competent rebuilder (if you can find one) and mount it on a Eddelbrock manifold.

The Quadrajet that's on it is a good carburetor if it's rebuilt right. If you really want to go aftermaket, I would say go with a Holley or Edelbrock. If the engine is stock, I would suggest staying with a 500-600 cfm carb. They both also make spreadbore versions that will bolt to your stock intake manifold.
