I start the car and turn on the AC. The gauge reads low. I tap the trigger on the recharge bottle and the gauge reads Overcharged right away. When I turn off the AC (and the car), the gauge does not go down. When I remove the gauge from the low pressure inlet, it seems that all the refrigerant that I just put in escapes. The more I put in the more escapes. It seems as if the refrigerant does not get into the system. What’s up?

I'm afraid that this will have to go to a professional repair facility. First of all, there is probably a leak somewhere in your system that has caused enough pressure to drop so that the A/C does not function. Next, there is air in the system, and it can be compressed. When you hook it up, it reads low pressure, but as soon as you try to add it, the air compresses with the pressure from the bottle without really adding any appreciable amount. Then you unhook it and it seems that none has entered the system, because it hasn't. After the leak is fixed, then a professional technician, certified in EPA Section 609 A/C refrigerant handling, must check the compressor, computer control command and pressure switch to make sure the rest of the system is functioning. Then a vacuum must be pulled on the system for at least 45 minutes, and this requires a very expensive, specialized piece of equipment. After all of the moisture and air has been evacuated, and if the system holds a vacuum, then it must be recharged with the right amount of oil and refrigerant to charge the system correctly and get your A/C back into operation. I know that this probably isn't what you wanted to hear, but it really is the real skinny and I want to help you out. Any professional technician that works on A/C is required, by federal law, to have Section 609 A/C certification. I recommend asking this question first when calling repair facilities. If they do not know what you are talking about, hang up and try the next one. You can find a shop like mine, rated in the top 3-4% of all shops in the nation, on ASE.com. Most likely a line has collapsed or the shrader valve is stuck closed. You should remove the shrader valve and see if that helps. If it is still blocked then you have a bigger issue with restriction in a line or componant.More Questions & Answers ...
