I have a baja, and after realizing it was a lot easier to wear goggles than having to clean the windshield every 10 minutes, I too removed mine. I was also motivated not to replace it after the last time it got broken with flying rocks from people in front of me.
Im thinking chicken wire instead.

Well because the windsheilds are prone to being cracked or got really dirty quite easy, It was considered eaiser than trying to spend more money to add systems to keep the windshield clean. During the baja the cars will go thru a variety of terrian and road conditions. Also no windsheild in the summer allows free flow cooling as they don't need to hook up fans or any other cooling means.
