Does anyone know why the gas mileage on my 2006 Ford Escape would be dropping by 1 MPG?

Question:
My 2006 Ford Escape Limited (V6, Automatic) usually was getting about 21.4 MPG and over the last few months it has been at 20.4.

I want to buy a 2006 Dodge Charger and I'm stuck between colors. Should I get Black, Silver, or Green?

My driving patterns (highway vs. city) are about the same.

Has this occured in conjunction with any other events or changes? Although a decrease of 1 MPG is not worth worrying about, a change in efficiency IS telling you somthing. A local station you fill up at may have changed fuel formulation, and if you've only filled up at that station you would attribute it to a problem with your vehichle. Tire pressure can make a difference, actually so can alignment, so watch your tire wear pattern (all 4). The temp can make very substancial difference in milage, the shorter your daily drive the more difference it makes (takes longer to get into open loop). A change in weight or even brand (though highly unlikely) of motor oil may make a difference. A lazy o2 sensor will decrese efficiency, and a tune up may be a good idea. The bad part is a decrease that small may be almost impossible to pinpoint, most sensors can throw off stoichiometry that much without causing a fault code. But check the obvious things, which have all been suggested, maybe do a tune up, and keep monitering it, a problem wont go away.

low tire pressure or the weather.. cold changes the mpg.. could be your foot on the gas....if it was 3 or 4 mpg it might mean something...1 mpg is nothing..

speed governor?

may need a good tune up (plugs wires filters etc.) and put some injecter cleaner in the gas. air pressure in tires may be low too.

1 mpg? Did you fill up your tires when winter hit? It could be just about anything. 1mpg is so small almost anything could cause the difference. Hell, the thicker winter air could be causing more air resistance, that might be enough. Also, the computer could be miscalculating it, regardless.

I say don't get worried until summer. Check your tires, check your filters, and after that if it doesn't go up in the summer, start looking at other stuff.

Is there snow where you are, by the way? The difference of starting moving on a slippery surface would DEFINITELY be enough to see a drop in overall fuel economy.

My husband wants to know what motors can interchange with an 85 VW Cabriolet.?

air cleaner, fuel filter. winter gas is formulated different than other times of the season. Warming up the car if its cold out even it it is only for a few minutes idling uses alot of gas. And dont take it to FORD. They do not warranty poor fuel milage. You can call the dealership and ask for a copy of the TSB ( Technical Servive Bulletin) for the fuel milage concerns. It gives you ideas of ways to save milage.like air psi, changing oil and filters regularly, taking off slow and stopping sooner. Believe it or not fast short stops can use more fuel than stopping slowly. I always look ahead and if a light changes to red i bump the car in neutral and coast to a stop to save fuel. Cause I drive mustang V8's and I need to save as much gas as I can in them. Also FORD say dont rely on those trip meters its only estimates of fuel milage. My wifes 06 fusion's trip meter gets better milage the further she drives

Some may say 1 mpg is nothing, but if you have a 20 gallon fuel tank then that is 20 extra miles that you can't go. Change your fuel filter every year ro 15-20,000 miles. Check you tire pressure, throw in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner every oil change, monitor your driving habits, and watch your idle time. When it's cold outside some people tend to let their cars idle longer, and this kills gas mileage. Hope this helps.

Ask the same question when you drop from 21mpg to 16mpg and then I'd say you have a real issue on your hands.
