after filling up my 05 mariner till the pump shuts off the gas gauge shows full, after only 12 miles the gas gauge is approching 3/4 full, at 103 miles the gauge is showing 1/2 full, at 187 miles the gauge shows 1/4. the mileage seems to be around 20mpg when i fill it the tank is a 16.5 gallon tank its hard to estimate how many gallons are left by looking at the gauge. is this normal for this model year or is my gas gauge not functioning properly. does anybody else have this problem?

That is very odd. Usually the upper half is larger than the lower half. It looks as though your last quarter is the largest. I calculated 20mpg so u should be averaging around 330 miles to a tank, meaning the last quarter is giving u 143 miles.I would imagine (speculation on my part) to save money the guages are probably universal for many vechicles so companies can save manufacturing costs and the lines probably don't match up to where they truly should be. I guess if you know what mileage u are getting then should be able to manage ok, but best to ask the dealer and see what answer they give u.

my explorer would do that if you have a good relationship with the dealer you may talk them into changing it if its under warrantyyou should have a low fuel light that comes on with about 3-3.5 gallons left

Gas gauges are typically non-linear and that applies to all makes. Usually, they are slow to come off "Full" and fast to go from 1/2 tank to "Empty."
I'd have it checked..Ford has had some issues with linearity (they will tell you to try a different brand of gas for a bit though as some gasolines can cause an issue due to sulfur content)
Bring it in and ask to have it checked cause at 20 mpg and a 16 gal tank.. you shouldn't be hitting 1/2 until 150 miles or so...
