Your 1993 Golf won't have published CO2 emissions - it is too old, before CO2 emissions were measured as part of the European vehicle certification process. It will be taxed on engine size only.What could be wrong with my '96 Chrysler Concord if the car shakes when I go to turn on the highway?
Only vehicles first registered from 1st March 2001 are taxed according to CO2 emissions.

However this only lists new cars on sale today, so may not be correct for cars registered last week, never mind cars a few years old.
For cars first registered from March 2001, the CO2 emissions are stated on the V5c registration document.

Your car was built before 2001 so the tax bracket goes off the engine size, there are 2 brackets for a car this age and they are below 1549cc or above.Cars built after 2001 have the emissions on the log book.
