I'm looking at buying an 89 Corvette and will have a mechanic do a thorough exam before I decide to buy or not. But when I was looking at the vehicle I noticed that the weather stripping on the BOTTOM FRONT of both doors was wet. Also, the interior on the SIDE of the door at the bottom (vertical portion) of the door was also slightly damp.
We've had some pretty heavy rains around here over the weekend, but I didn't notice any moisture along the top weather-stripping (around the door windows), like I would expect if the doors didn't get closed good before the rain. It was the same with both doors - wet on the bottom front.

I'm stumped as to what would cause that. So I'm wondering if anyone else has seen that with older Vettes. Is it possibly bad-weather-stripping on the bottom, or is there possibly a bigger issue?

i let a 75 set all winter and it had mushrooms growing in the carpets the next time i opened it up..the seals were good but the t-tops always leaked a little bit

Yes Corvettes can have leaks around the T-Tops or the ones with the removable roof panel the weather-stripping gets old and hard and leaks develop it is common with the older cars really a Corvette is a fair weather machine.I have a Kia Sedona and the central locking keeps locking all the doors?
Check to see how much space is between the window and the weather stripping. some may be seeping in there and dripping down. If it is wet at the bottom there might be some rust to look out for two. Like the other guys said, the T-tops tend to leak. If there is those side moldings on the door, look to see if it is loose, maybe some of the water is seeping through where one of the drill holes was to put the molding on. Also be sure to ask the mechanic.Weather stripping is always a problem! I once went to a wedding in my '74 when it started raining. By the time I got to the wedding my dress was soaked! And I had the t-tops in! I now own a '03 and had to have it back to the dealer because of the weatherstripping around the glass roof. If you take the top out you have to be very careful how you put it back so the rubber does not get bent or kinked.. I would think the rubber around the door is just getting old & needs replacing.
my buddy just got a 75 and he had to pull his windows on the door in as they had a gap at the top of them where it meets the weather stripping and was leaking water.
Weatherstripping is available from many after market catalogs. A Chevy dealer with several Corvette sales will also be helpful in the future for you.

A common problem I encountered was a wet door sill after washing or driving in the rain. This was remedied by an aftermarket self-adhesive strip of black rubber adhered to the bottom of the door...$24.95 part #29382 from Eckler's but available for the same price from other catalogs...This was a simple fix for a common problem. It may be what you need.

Mid-America, Eckler's, Corvette Central, Zip Products are names to remember. All have complete weatherstip kits available...$199 for the GM or $99 for aftermarket. There is also a "dogleg" part that fits between the upper dash and door sill. Inspect all weatherstripping for evident rotting or tears. You can view these parts online.

As for any specific problems...by 1989 the C4 was produced for 5 complete years. Any problems were found early on and eliminated. At this point in time this car is 18 yrs old. Some parts have worn out, others like weatherstripping may be damaged through normal wear and tear.
Be prepared to spend some money for maintenance of your dream car. This is not a Chevy. You will learn that quickly when looking for parts and a good Corvette mechanic. Parts tend to be a little more expensive because they are truly high performance parts.

Don't expect to go to Auto Zone, Walmart, or Pep Boys for new tires or shocks...remember "high performance." Tune-up parts are standard Delco parts. No need for aftermarket garbage. This car was designed to run on Delco parts and high octane fuel.
