The engine number is normally on a sticker on the plastic cam belt cover is this has gone you will find the number at the top of the engine block in one of two places depending on which engine you have it will either be on the front of the engine at the top of the block just under the head or on the end of the block above the gear box.PS I have never had to give the engine number to apply for a log book just the registration and 17 digit VIN number found in the bottom corner of the windscreen and on the alluminium vin tag found under the bonnet.
