Can anyone please explain the use of the hold control on the auto gear shift lever on my Mazda 626 1996 ?

When you press it the hold light lights on the dash, and the transmission will stay locked in top gear and not go into overdrive. Handy when pulling a loaded trailer or driving in the mountains. Leave it off the rest of the time for better economy.
