If you can get past the looks, also check out the Scion xB and the Honda Element. The xB, while slightly underpowered, will average you around 30mpg. Not bad for a small SUV.

Originally Suzuki's now are really Daewoo's, rebadged. After GM bought the factories overseas, the Daewoo's were later absorbed onto Suzuki's (even the Chevy Aveo is a Daewoo) and Daewoo...well, we obviously see where they went...

Although personally I would recommend the Mazda5... I have 2 friends who didn't want something as large as a minivan, but wanted the space for 6 passengers, flip/fold/dissapearing 3rd row seats, with 4 cylinder fuel economy with great safety ratings. They were able to purchase them oen for $19K for the entry model which is very well equipped, and $21K for the top model "touring" with Navigation.
