Chevy cavalier problem. I got home and tried to park but it would not shift past reverse. Then it got stuck on reverse even when shifted into Drive it would move backwards.

After we managed to put it on park the car breaks will not kick in so we had to put the emergency break on. Now the car wont start at all and a few lights are on in the dashboard amongs them ETS and Check engine and Anti Theft System.

What has happened is that the cable has become disconnected, broken, or jammed that leads from the gearshift to the transmission. Here is what you do.....take the console plastic off of the gearshift and disconnect the cables from the gearshift. See if you can manually move the gearshift easily without the cables on it. If you can't, manually shift the gears with the cables and figure out what is causing the hang up in the mechanical operation of the shifter. If you can, go to the transmission where the cable mounts to the tranny. Disconnect that.....manually put the car in park by sliding the metal piece where the cable connects one notch to park. Your car will start. The only thing left to do is replace the cable. The reason all of the lights are on is because you have not started the car yet. All working lights light up when the car is not running to show that they are working properly and go off when the car starts when there are no problems. Sounds like your shift linkage slipped, possibly due to some snow or ice that got stuck in it? Either way, the transmission is not in the same gear as the shifter so if it's not in neutral it won't start. You might be able to start it if your turn the key to start and move the shifter until it starts, but that might not work.Okay not sure between the 07 vw jetta or the scion tc. I am 23. Please help me decide...?
check your fuses there is one fuse that controls the shifting into gear.and if it blows it won't shift into any gear and if it don't go into park it won't start and all the dash will light up and it will appear to look like a big problem try this first .allways try the eazy things first before you start tareing the inside appart or messing with the linkage good luckMore Questions & Answers ...
