How do you know if your cam is bad?

Question:
Heres one for you car guys i cant get my car started i fix the gas problem if some of you remember(carb).Ive got that 64 impala with a 355ci camero motor.I got the timing right and i have just the right amount of fuel going in it,spark is good..But it seems that i keep adjusting the valves all the time and they still whineds up loose on rocker.Is that a bad cam or what please help.And thanks to all that reaspond before.

SOUNDS LIKE WORN LIFTERS THEY ARE COLLAPSING ADJUSTING NUTS BACKING OFF IS THE OIL PUMP WEAK MAY NOT BE GETTING ENOUGH OIL PRESSURE OR IS THE BLOCK GETTING PROPER OIL IF CAM WAS BAD THEY NORMALLY BACKFIRE THROUGH CARB OR EXHAUST COULD BE MANY PROBLEMS GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS HELPS

I was given a new Alfa Romeo gear knob as a present but can't seem to get the existing one off, any ideas?

The adjusters may be coming loose,damaged,or you are not tightening them enough.Take them out one at a time,clean them off real good with brake clean,check the threads on the nut,adjuster screw and the threads in the rocker.If they are damaged replace them,if not reinstall them and put some blue thread locker on the adjuster screw and nut,then adjust the valve.Let it sit 4 or 5 hours to set up the thread locker before starting.

without knowing what cam shaft you have..all I can say is if you suspect flat lobe,s....measure the valve lift on all ..intake,s should all be the same..exhaust also..if a few are different ....remove your intake manifold & inspect your cam....if your rocker hardware is worn ...replace the nut,s with lock nut,s...if adjustment,s are still frequint..check your cam!.......by the way ...all measurement,s on valve,s should be done cylinder by cylinder..while that cylinder is at top dead center ,then again on intake,& exhaust stroke,s. good luck!

assuming you have hydraulic lifters back off each rocker arm
using a squirt oil can fill each push rod up with oil slip the rocker back on top of the rod put your hand on it and using the rocker as a handle push that push rod in and out try to make the lifter take in the oil my mind is saying that this car has sat a long time and your lifters are dry put the rockers back on snug each rocker nut down till you feel a little tension
try and start it no valve covers if it runs adjust valve with it running.if it dont run pull the intake have a look at the cam and the lifters at same time ..may end up pulling that cam I'd still be looking at the lifters ..call me stubborn
