I'm having problems with my 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE. HELP!?

Question:
Hi there. If you are reading this, and can offersome advice...THANK YOU! Here is my situation. I bought a 1997 Jeep Wrangler about 2 weeks ago. It only has 57,000 mile on it - which is why I bought it. I brought it home and drove it a few days - only to find that it has some problems. First, the oil was filthy. I had to change the oil twice to get a clean dipstick. Then the front main seal started leaking (just a little). Also, it sputters shifting in the low gears once warmed up - like it is missing. And finally, when idling, the oil pressure guage drops below 10, and my "Check Guages" light comes on. I would like to get a sense of what is going on with this Jeep before I take it to the dealer and drop a bunch of money trying to figure it out. To recap:
1. 1997 Jeep Wrangler SE with 57,000 miles.
2. Main seal leaking a few drops per day.
3. Sputters in low gears once warmed-up.
4. Oil pressure drops below 10 when idling.

Im going to do a brake job on a '99 taurus wagon/w ABS?

Any help would be great! Did I buy a Lemon? THANKS! AC.

By the sounds of the oil being neglected, everything else probably was too. Start out with a thorough tune up: Plugs, distributor cap & rotor, ignition wires, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve. Also, pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. You can do all of this yourself if you're mechanically inclined, & own some basic hand tools. You'll save alot of coin that way.
That should take care of the sputtering problem.
The leak sounds like a timing case seal, which again you can do yourself, but I do'nt recommend it if you're a novice.Maybe you have a buddy that you can trust to help you out, & again save some coin.
The oil pressure problem is the main issue. Sounds like there's alot of sludge built up causing the sump to be restricted. The only way to cure that is to pull the oil pan & sump & clean them thoroughly.
Do'nt bring it to the dealer if you can avoid it!
Dealerships charge top dollar for repairs that can be done by a local mechanic cheaper, & alot of times better & faster.
Trust me on that, I was a dealership mechanic, I know what goes on in those places.
Remember, a dealerships main source of income is selling new vehicles, not repairing old ones.
Did you know that the only reason that car dealers have service departments is because the manufacturers require them to? It's not to help the public, they have to service to keep their shingle hanging out front.
Find a local mechanic you can trust, & save yourself alot of aggrivation.
Hope this helped you out, let me know how you made out.
GOOD LUCK!

I just bought my first 2004 Porsche BoxsterS 42k miles on .What advice would u give to a first Porsche owner?

it sound like the vehicle was not well maintain. DO NOT spend anymore money to the vehicle. the engine is damage due to dirty oil and low oil pressure that you describe. once the sludge get into the engine, there is no magic potion to eliminate the sludge that block the oil passages.

Need a good car alarm. and how much will it cost?

Firstly, The main seal is very common on a Jeep Cherokee. You will have to replace it, there is nothing else that will remedy the problem. As far as the sputtering in low gears during acceleration, it could be a couple of different problems. You could be in need of a tune up, or it could be in the transmission. Another possibility is that the catalytic converter is starting to get plugged up. Have the dealer drive the vehicle and give you some advice as to what they think it is. It is too hard for me to diagnose that exact problem not having seen the car do it. As far as the oil pressure is concerned, one of two things is happening. A: The oil pressure sending unit is bad, or B: The oil pump is starting to go out. I say that because it may be clogged, there is a screen on the pump that sits in the crank case, it very well may be clogged and is only picking up enough oil during acceleration. That is bad and can cause major problems with the engine. This is probably due to the oil having not being changed for a long peroid of time. Have your dealer take a look, it is pretty expensive to have that done on a jeep, so be wary before you drop that kind of money on it. Hope this helps...

Leaky seal - if you can live with a few drips per day, it can probably wait until it worsens. Personally though, when I find a leak, I get it resolved ASAP.

Sputtering - if the oil was as bad as you say, it's probably overdue for a general tuneup. Do the following:
• Pour in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner with your next fill up.
• change the spark plugs - use cheapies: Champion, Autolite, or NGK. Don't use Bosch +4 or any other platinum, they foul in a Jeep engine
• replace the distributor cap and rotor
• replace the air filter - I prefer getting this from a Jeep dealership
• spark plug wires wouldn't hurt, but probably not as critical (I recommend getting these from a Jeep dealership; aftermarket plug wires are very random).

Then in the not too distant future, do the following:
• change fluids in the transmission, transfer case, and front and rear differentials
• if it's an automatic transmission, replace the transmission filter
• check condition of the brake pads, serpentine belt, radiator hoses
• check the coolant level and power steering fluid level, top off as needed

Note: your fuel filter is inside the fuel tank, and it is a low-maintenance design. So if you're used to changing a fuel filter as part of your maintenance routine, it can be skipped on your Jeep, and it's rarely the source of problems.

Oil pressure gauge - don't worry about this. I've driven or rode in Wranglers from 97, 98, 01, 02, 05, and 06. Every one of them does this. At running RPM's the oil pressure gauge points straight up or slightly right, at idle tips to the left a bit. If there is an issue with oil pressure (or the sending unit) you will see: gauge drops to zero or pegs out at maximum, the big red "check gauges" light comes on, an audible BEEP is emitted.

"At low speed (600 rpm) oil pressure should be 13 psi. At 1600 rpm and higher it should be 37-75 psi. Oil pressure relief kicks in at 75 psi."

I want to know?

I would worry about the "skipping" most. Are the plugs fouled? It is the motor right not the transmission? Does your jeep have spark plug wires? I know that the 2000 model has coilpacks mounted to a piece of bus or something that connects to the plugs and that the 2000 model does not have wires.

Do i need to change the factory shocks on my car if i install coilovers to lower it. it is a 01 neon?

I looked at a tj once that had 13000 miles on it and it was either 1 or 2 years old. I thought about offering 9000 for it, but was scared that they might take it. It was used as a rental jeep at the beach and had significant wear and corrosion. If I buy a used car I try to find one that has been cared for rather than one that just has few miles or is newer. Cars that have been taken care of will always serve you better.

Where is the ECM on a 97 Mazda 626?

1. 57,000 on 2.5l is very low mileage, should be in good shape
2.Is oil leak from front seal or timing chain cover? no big deal
3. sputters - try tuneup - distributor cap, wires and plugs
4. oil pressure - most like oil pressure sending unit - common problem
