I inherited an '85 chevy p/u. it had the wrong distributor( I replaced with correct) and I rebuilt the !@#$%$#@! rochchester 4me q-jet. now it backfires terribly. i have the correct firing order and plugs wires on correct plugs. I have never been that far into an engine to know if the h-balancer is keyed so that it may be idiot proof from the guy that originally worked on it. or did it just jump time on the timing chain?

The balancer can only be installed in one position . BUT the cam only turns once for every two turns of the crank. So your timing mark lines up at the top of the compression stroke ( when the spark plug fires ) Or at the top on the exhaust stroke ( when the piston pushes out all of the burnt fuel ) When your timing mark lines up you either have it right or you are 180* off.Suspension lift costs for a 2002 Chevy Z71?
Pull the #1 spark plug and turn the motor over with your thumb over the hole . You will feel the pressure build up on the compression stroke . Stop turning when it reaches the timing mark and you will be set on the right one.

you put the distributor in wrong. pull it out, find number one on the engine, 18436572 order. I think it is front right number 1 on that engine, but look it up to be sure. dont make it any more complicated than it has to be. i cant tell you how many times i have been behind someone that swears they put the distributor in right. i pull it out, start over, put it in, line it up and it starts right up.yes it has a key so it cannot be installed wrong. you did not mention when this engine backfires. please update info and i will come back later to read.

i own a repair shop,and no you cant install the balancer 180 out,,but you can the distributor,,it can be that far out,,it sounds like you have it in wrong if you showing to be 180 degrees out,,that's easy to fix though,,just pull it up ,and rotate it back to where it should be ,,,you need to set it at no,1, tdc,and leave enough room so that it can be turned to set it right once it starts,,i usually split the difference in the distance this way you have travel room with the distributor,,good luck hope this help,s.happy new years.I am dieing to find out other opinions. No. The balancer has a key way that lines up with the crankshaft key way that uses a key that fits into the two related parts. Releast the distributer, lifting up enough to turn the rotor and shaft 180 degrees and reposition. OK. first make sure that you put the wires in the order 18436572 on the cap following the rotation direction of the rotor. If you did then it is possible that you started 180 out. Dont worry. Just line up the timing marks on the balancer and the arrow on 0 degrees, check where the rotor is and put #1 wire there and then follow with the rest in direction of rotor rotation. If it backfires it 180 out on the distributor (not the balancer that is not possible). Take the #1 wire and put it in the socket directly across form where it currently is on the cap and then remove and reinstall all the rest of the wires again. Should run....and remember that the distributor hold down bolt needs to be loose enough that you can move the distributor back and forth while trying to start. The timing cover which has the timing indicator on it is interchangeable on several engines 289? 302 305 350. likewise Many of the balancers are interchangeable. BUT, each engine must have the PROPER balancer and the appropriate timing cover. On the flat of the block casting,in front of the head, behind the water pump, on the actual block there is a number STAMPED into the metal. MITCHELL or some other good manual will give you a list of numbers that will tell you exactly what engine you have. I think the timing is out or the firing order is out.. You did not state if the thing runs or not, just that it backfires. If it does run it is not 180 out. If it's not starting and is just backfiring, and you took the time to put wires on correctly and put distrib in at #1 cyl tdc, simply lift the distrib and turn rotor 180 degrees (1/2 turn,) put it back down and start the beast.2003 ACCORD LX headlights-dash lights?
no you can't have the harmonic balancer a 180 out it is keyed but the can slip on their rubber isolators but you-sly not that much the best way is to take distributor take number won spark plug out first won on right side have a Friend bump the starter put you finger in spark plug hole win it blows your finger out put distributor back in have the rotor on top just past number one spark plug and that should get it. but you said it back fired wen the are a 180 out they will not run so make shear you have got plug wires on right hope this helpsif it runs but backfires your timing is maybe a tooth or two off, but if it doesn't even start, or starts and dies with a backfire or two then you may be 180 degrees off. if it does run then either your wires are crossed or your a tooth off
i agree with dupis but if it runs and backfires ur timming is proper but might need fine tunning u dident say if it ever ran or not so im thinking not it may also be a bent valve causing the back fire or the timming chain itself good luck
