If you get a well looked after one you won't go far wrong! I have a Rover 200 and it is a brilliant car - never had any trouble with it! Reliable, fast enough, comfortable to drive, good MPG.

Couple of points to look for! If it is the old shape (wedge) check the rear suspension bushes. If these are worn and cracked make sure they get changed b4 you buy...they can throw the whole car out of alignment and do your tyres in very quickly.

On any 200 with the K series engine - check the area behind the engine for water (just underneath the injector manifold). If you find water (after letting it tick over for a while) the inlet manifold gasket has probably dried out and split. This is needed as the fuel injection manifold is cooled by water from the coolant system and if split it allows coolant to mix with the fuel as it enters the engine and causes misfires and difficult starting.

Also, remove the oil filler cap and check to see if there is a yellowy white sludge in the cap...if present this usually is a good sign that the head gasket has gone...and that is expensive to repair.

Also look in the coolant filler tank...see if there is any oily residue....that again indicates that oil is mixing in the water and is probably the head gasket.

Find a good 200 and you will not have a problem....I change the oil in mine every 6,000 miles (not that I have to - I just do) and it is a lovely car.
