At around 25 MPH, in second gear, the RPM will jump around 1000, then come back down to normal. I also think it is missing a gear between there and 52 or so MPH. So, Y!, What's up?

I had a 93 Explorer with the same problem. It's the torque converter locking and unlocking. It's not the transmissions fault, it's the computer that controls it. A bad MAF sensor, throttle position sensor or vacuum leak can cause it.And if it still has the original fluid, it's about ten years overdue for a flush.
