I own a transmission shop, and I can tell you this; 90% of the time this is caused by a spark plug breaking down causing a miss in the engine, thus makes the vehicle jerk when you apply the gas. It will do it worse like when you are going up a hill when the transmission is in the lock up mode. I am assuming you are talking about an automatic transmission? Another thing that it can be is; the lock up converter solenoid not releasing (when it should) lagging the engine. Sometimes this solenoid will go bad, and it can even cause it to stall the engine when you come to a stop. If it is just sticking; add a bottle of some stuff called "Lube Gard" to the transmission. This is some good stuff, and usually fixes the problem. If not; then replacement of the torque converter lock-up solenoid may be the only fix. You want to check the fluid level to make sure its not sucking air from being low for some reason. With the engine at operating temperature, place the vehicle on level ground, put the tranny in park, check the fluid level, and check it many times. One one side of the stick you will get one reading, and get another on the other side of the stick. You need to go by the side that is lowest, and don't over fill the transmission. A pint over full may not harm it, but a quart is way too much. Add only about a glass full at a time if you can see it on the stick, and this way you won't over fill it. An over full tranny must be drawn back out with a hand pump, so to save yourself the trouble, check it slowly, and often until you are up to the top of the XXXX on the stick.
