Can I install a double-din VW stereo in my 2001.5 VW Passat that came with a single-din?

Yes, it has been done before. I went the other way on a 2003 and removed the double DIN to replace it with an Alpine and a pocket. Couldn't stand the crummy 2003 stereo radio/CD/cassette.
