There is NOT a 4 wheel drive version of the element. They are either 2 wheel drive or All wheel drive. If it's all wheel, there will be a little tag that says it on the back window..lower left corner.The VIN number also indicates what it is.
that vehicle would be front wheel drive if it wasnt in 4 wheel drive. lift the entire vehicle put it in drive and see if the tires spin.

However, 4WD can be Full-Time or Part-Time w/ High & Low gears and can go rock climbing.
