on my transmission (automatic) shifter thing i have a button that says manuel, and then 1,2 and 3 on the box where it says drive and reverse and all that, can someone explain these things to me, and what they do, and when they are necessary

They are not at all necesssary, they are basically so you can control the point at which your transmission changes gears! You can use if you want to but I would get someone to teach you the proper shift points so you dont blow your motor or break a rod! Press Manual and then you have to physically shift the car between 1, 2, and 3. If you try to start from a stop with the car in 2 or 3 it will not be so great for performance or the transmission.So you will have to pull it back into 2, then into 1 as you come to a stop or slow for a turn.
