There is a larger in-line 6 cylinder engine called a 3.5 litre as found in the 535i, 635csi, and 735i in the late 1980s. The only serious complications would be to have the same kind of transmission as you now have in the 86 BMW 2 door. If you have a 5 speed manual, you should stick with a 5 speed manual from the 3 models listed above. That may be a very tricky operation, because there were not many 5 speed BMW manual transmissions between the 1988 and 1992 model years. Be sure if you do an engine and trans. swap that you bring along the two piece driveshaft that goes with the chosen transmission. There will likely be some objections to your car's performance if you don't match up the rear axle drive and pinion gear ratios.
