Ford makes a hybrid SUV (the escape), why don't they make a hybrid truck like a Ranger hybrid?
Unless you live in the northern part of Canada, cold starts are not a problem any more on modern diesel engines. Go to tdiclub.com and you'll find LOTS of REAL information on the tdi. You turn the key for 30 secs to let the gloplugs come on, and it starts instantly. It takes a while for the cabin to warm up, but you wont have any starting problems. Just be sure to use some anti-gelling fluid like Standyne.I do agree that the timing belt is a critical part, so if the one you are looking at has not had a belt change and has more than 60,000 miles on it, be prepared to spend about $500-600 to have it replaced. There is a kit which actually includes upgraded rollers, water pump and stretch bolts, and the job requires special tools. BUT do NOT bring it to VW. At the site I gave you, there is a link to trusted TDI Mechanics all over the US and Canada.
I recently sold mine due to a job change, but it was a solid little performer, and diesel prices are typically cheaper after winter months are over, since the #2 oil used to heat homes is the same as diesel fuel. You can also experiment with bio-diesel, which reduces depedancy on foreign oil.
Mazda B2200 engine starts but stops when key released?
good car in warm climates..not so good in cold. Not a lot of maintenance required, but pricey when things fail!I think the biggest issue is the timing belt. How many miles are on the car that you are looking at? With a diesel motor the piston comes vary close to the valve and when the belt goes bad, the two will collide. $$$$$$
I have a Jetta TDI, no problems in the deep cold. It just takes a while to get warm inside. Things have changed since the 70s. I have heard of timing belt changes necessary on a regular basis, like 50,000 miles or so. On average, diesel engines are supposed to last 300,000 miles, so the car around it needs to be maintained. Finding a mechanic who actually knows what he's doing with a TDI can be difficult.
How do you adjust the headlights on a 1995 Honda Civic?
A good site to check out if you're interested in a TDI is TDIclub.com. Of course, there is a lot of discussion on the problems because not too many people post just to say..."No problems today". I just love my fuel mileage with my car...44mpg. Good luck!
95 Jeep Cherokee suddenly shuts off while driving.?
You don't say how many miles or where you live. In any case if you don't have documentation of when the timing belt has been changed, do it as soon as you buy that wonderful car.I don't have Jetta, but its ancestor - the Rabbit tubodiesel. Basically same car with more problems.(the rabbit)- But I have been fortunate in that department too. Maintenance wise - check my aircleaner monthly and tap out the dirt, fuel filter get a drain every year...changed every 2, ...timing belt gets changed RELIGIOUSLY 60,000 miles(and I have the dealer(or a VW repair shop that has the injection timing checking equipment) to check injection timing after personally changing the belt myself).. oil changes&filter(regular oil) every 6000 miles.
As for glo plugs. You will have the fast plugs - total wait time 6 sec. before you should crank the engine. Car will start immediately.
Only other thing on diesels is get a good battery(not just 575 cranking amps) Get 1000amps. Smartest way to go.
Got 500,000mi on it right now...not complaining
All VW cost more on maintance then most cars. I had a Jetta VR6 and would pay $45 for an oil change but other then regular maintance I didn't have any problems out of it.
