Mercedes Benz 190E 1993 - Light out in instrument panel?

Question:
Can anyone tell me how to change a lamp in the instrument panel? In the owner's manual I can't even find a listing for instrument panel lights! One side of my instrument panel went dark. Fortunately I can still read the left side of the speedometer. I'd like to know what type lamp to get and how to replace it.

that cluster is also more difficult than most mbz and special care must be taken. you need to gently remove it with the tools or risk breaking the clear plastic cover.

You have to remove the instrument cluster in order to replace any of the bulbs in back. It is likely that the bulb that it will require will be a 194, but I cannot be sure. It will probably be available at a parts store once you get the old one out. Most likely there will be various fascia and bezels that pop out and hide bolts or screws for other sections until you get to the bolts that hold the cluster in. If this isn't something that you feel like tackling I recommend taking it to a repair facility. You can find an ASE Blue Seal rated facility on ASE.com. This elite certification is given to 3-4% of shops across the nation.

Unfortunately, you have to pull the instrument cluster to work on the bulbs. It's an unnecessarily difficult procedure, and may be worth a few bucks to have done professionally. Here's a quick rundown of the procedure:

1) pry off the thin plastic fascia strips from the dashboard. These are the 3/4" or so strips that are below the steering wheel, they run straight across the dash. There are two pieces, one on either side of the steering column.

2) Once the strips are out, you will be able to unscrew the retaining screws on the lower padded dash. This can be swung down carefully. If you want to remove it entirely, remove the screws that secure it to the firewall.

3) You will now need to remove the knee bolster from below the dash. This is done with a 10mm socket and a long extension. There are holes in the bottom of the bolster that give you access to the retaining nuts. Just loosen the nuts. The bolster can be slid off the nuts once they are loose.

4) You're now going to have to reach under the dash and undo the speedometer cable. To do this, you will probably have to remove the plastic a/c plenums.

5) Reach up behind the dash and gently push the cluster towards you. You will now be able to reach around to the back of the cluster, and you will need to carefully disconnect all of the electrical connectors. There are many of these: each bulb on the lower right of the dash has a separate connector. There are two electrical connectors on the tachometer. There is an eight way connector on the left side of the dash. There are a couple of fiber optic connectors on each side of the dash. I've probably forgotten a few of them, but that's the basics. When you replace the dash, you're going to have to re-install all of these connectors blind, so go slow and mark them for later replacement.

I have a 2005 GT mustang and I need after market exhaust, anyone have an suggestions and please tell me why!

6) Once all the wiring is disconnected, the whole instrument cluster should just pull straight out. It's easier to do this if the steering wheel has been removed, but you can save yourself another bunch of trouble by worrying it out with the wheel in place. Once the cluster is out, replacement of the bulbs is straight forward.

My advice, check the fuses before you start. if you don't have to replace the bulbs, you will be much happier.
