Regular, Mid-grade or Premium fuel for VW Jetta VR6?

Question:
I have a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. It has a 6 cylinder engine. When I open the fuel door, it says to use Premium fuel. The Volkswagen service technician told me to use Regular fuel in the winter and Mid-Grade in the summer and to stop using Premium. Is the Volkswagen service tech wrong? If I should use Regular, why does my car say to use Premium? Am I going to damage anything by using Regular?

the middle octane changes the least because there is no middle octane, it just pumps half and half from the high and low, thats why its ALWAYS a dead center octane rating, not to mention not having to have a 3rd tank to fill at the station.

As for octane - it has less to do with economy, and more to do with your engine.

The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting.

Can someone give me a source of information regarding the '87 Mustang LX that I previously asked about?

The compression ratio of your engine determines the octane rating of the gas you must use in the car. One way to increase the horsepower of an engine of a given displacement is to increase its compression ratio. So a "high-performance engine" has a higher compression ratio and requires higher-octane fuel. The advantage of a high compression ratio is that it gives your engine a higher horsepower rating for a given engine weight -- that is what makes the engine "high performance." The disadvantage is that the gasoline for your engine costs more.

Is there a place online that I could find out where the rear shock tower is on my 05 Honda civic lx?

hey man i have been down this road before. i had the same thing happen with one of my cars. this is what i found out. threr are many different options here. are you looking for economy, then use a higher grade...93 or are you looking at your wallet...use 87. the truth is the gas compines change ther blends for summer. less polution. so i found that even in high performance cars its best to use 89 or mid grade due to the fact it changes the least. but its all a personal preferance. just know where you buy gas and trust that place dosent "water" it down and you will be fine. i always add a injector cleaner once every three months... never hurts and always helps. buts that it man if the company says use premium then take it for on your own to figure out what runs best in the car.

What do you think of the 1986 BMW 735i?

most cars recommend premium fuel though they will run just fine on regular. you are not going to damage anything by using regular. i have driven my MK3 VR6 on regular for over 30k miles and it was doing just great. I currently run mid-grade (89) on a 388whp turbo setup on the same car (premium is just too damn expensive). unless im gonna race, it doesnt matter, it runs just fine on the mid grade. if you still arent comfortable with using regular, use midgrade. in my opinion, premium is not necessary and so far no problems have occurred and none of my friends have experienced problems using a lower octane.

The question is what could happen. Pinging can blow a hole right through your very expensive forged aluminum pistons and failing to use Premium will invalidate your warranty on the power train(100K miles?)

What do u think of the black ford mondeo?

I am a DOHC16V kind of guy and been dealing with this since 1987. personally when I am poor I mix the cheap and the expensive 1/2 I can't use midgrade here, it is gasohol(not for the 16V CIS E -FI)
