95? When did you last have the timing belt/chain changed? Backfiring is an indication that there's a problem in the timing. Check the timing of distributor, and look into that belt/chain! Luck to you.

Backfiring has nothing to do with the fuel pump or filter. Have it scanned by a mechanic. You likely have a sensor gone bad that is causing it to run rich, causing the sputtering and backfiring. Please have it scanned, and don't just start replacing parts, hoping to correct the problem. It will be much cheaper to fix the problem the first time.
