1998 jeep xj sport, My transmission would not shift into park or neutral, it just squealed and grinded. Why?

I’m going to need to get some transmission work done and I’m trying to first diagnose the problem. the vehicle was driving fine. But when i got home and went to shift it into park the transmission started squealing. It did some squealing and grinding in both park and neutral. Once i shut the vehicle off and started it again the transmission seemed to work fine. Any ideas on what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix.
