First, what the temperature gage says may be different from what the actual temperature of the engine coolant is due to an air pocket or bad sensor/ wiring connection. You need to have the actual engine temperature measured with a non-contact Infrared (IR) temperature gun that's pointed at your thermostat housing. If there's signs that the engine is actually overheating and the coolant is flowing onto the ground, check for a bad thermostat, water pump or coolant leaks. If the engine stays cool at highway speeds and only overheats at idle, then your cooling fan may not be coming on. If it over heats at highway speeds, you may have a bad water pump or clogged radiator. Bleed the air from the cooling system per standard shop procedures. How do I remove rotor from front of 4 wheel drive explorer?

Your mechanic should also test the thermostat and the sensor that tells you that it is overheating.Need the meanings of the Toyota Echo idiot lights.?
First of all, you should check under your hood for the most obvious things. check your coolant fluid, make sure you used the specific BMW brand. Check for any signs of leaks. If nothing obvious strikes you while under the hood, it can be more complex, it might be the thermostat(check if your a/c & heater work). Or it might be your water pump thats failing.Did your mechanic check the Thermostat and the rest of the cooling system?

It could be either the Thermostat (usually the culprit), water pump, radiator, fan or the hoses.

Bad thermostat, maybe. What is wrong with my 93 Ford Explorer (Transmission)?
Radiator may be old and needs replacing or the thermostat may be bad. Try running your fingers across the fins of the radiator. If they flake off then you need a new radiator. The BMW radiators are aluminum and may corrode easily. But you may also have air in your cooling system. You can normally have a shop flush your coolans system for about $50.what is better a h22 or a b18c5?
This probably happens because there could be a problem with the coolant.what's the black supercar in Transporter 2.The one in the plane scene?

on these car if it is not leaking coolant. it is mostly likely a thermostat. bmw had a big run of problems with thermostats by behr(manf who makes thermosats for bmw). also water pump can have came apart. older bmw water pumps used a crappy plastic impller which came apart. good way to check for water pump is to check the flow coming out out of the bypass hsoe.as for thermostat9easiest way to check this temp in and out and fault memory. bmw's set fault coded a big percentage of the time when there is something wrong with the thermosatMore Questions & Answers ...
