What Is the Function of a Resonator?

Question:
I wanna replace the entire exhaust system from the headers all the way back to the muffler. I was told that I have a Resonator on my car along with my cat. I don't know if Ishould keep the Resonator cuz I don't know what it does. can anyone shed some light on this. is it something I need to keep on my car like the cat? ps I have a 98 chevy

i own a repair shop ,and its just another muffler really it helps deaden some of the sound before it gets to the muffler,they really don't use these much anymore ,but in the late 60,s and early 70,s the was really popular but that's really all it is,it will usually burn out long before the muffler will also,good luck i hope this helps.

The resonator simply cancels out exhaust tones, in short its kinda like a muffler. I removed the resonator from my 06 impala SS and it sounds alot better, along with the flowmasters.
