Question:
Has the 3.9 Magnum, has 178,000 miles, still runs strong, but is currently starting to miss a little and back fire. I talked to a local garage that I do a lot of business with, and money is short, so they told me to start by replacing the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Could this be the problem, and where I should start? Also, I am by no means a mechanic, but somewhat mechanical, but can someone give a brief idea of the best way to do this without messing up the wrong wires. Also, the distributor is behind the air filter which means I will have to take off the air filter to do all this correct? Thanks for your time.

Make sure to clean the areas around the plugs and distributor before working to minimize the debris that can get in them.Plugs are simple enough get the factory spec or equivalent from a auto parts store of dealer, then use a gage feeler or disc to spread the spark plug arm from the fire pin (specs should be in the operators manual or under the hood on a sticker). Make sure to put a small amount of lock tight on the threading of the plugs when putting bake in the plug holes, tighten till snug then 1/2 more turn. Wires can be bought specifically for the year and model, or you can up grade to a lower resistance set that you have to measure and cut to fit, straight forward and common sense is a plus. Mark the wires so you know which one goes where, on the wire on the distributor cap and on the block. Once you have the wires cut to fit replace all one at a time. Distributor is the last most times you'll need a new distributor cap, but firstly take it off and check it. If you take it off you'll see a small copper arm that rotates in a circle. At the end of the arm if you see build up then use a small wire brush to clean the end best as possible. If then end is corroded then its time for a new distributor cap. As the arm goes in a circle it contacts the wire in question in timing with the crankshaft to fire the plug igniting the cylinder, again in time with the crankshaft. Hope this helps, Good luck.I need a front bumper for my 1968 Falcon what years will work?
Yes, you need a tune up. Change the spark plugs. The wire too. The distributer cap is behind the air filter plastic cap, take it off to remove the old cap and put on the new one. When you take off the old cap take the wires off one by one and place them onto the ew cap in the right spot. You can always buy a haynes manual for your car at your local auto store that will show you how to do this stuff.More Questions & Answers ...
