After having an exhaust system replaced excessive noise still occurs. what could it be?

Question:
Initially it was thought to be the middle section containing the baffles which had broken down. Original symptoms occur with replacement. Catalytic convertor also replaced.
The question is directed at a VW Passat.

Take it back to the installer and have them check the welds and re-tighten all the clamps and check for rattles, this should all be covered under the warranty. If you had the whole system replaced and haven't run over anything that knocked anything loose than its all there responsibility. Unless its an exhaust manifold leak, if that's the case they should not have let you drive away without letting you know about it.

Well depending on what year and model it is I had a 95' Jetta and had that same issue. It happened to be the heat shield rattling on the exhaust.

The best thing you can do is trace the noise yourself, it doesn't require any technical knowledge or skill.
Park with two wheels on a curb so you can just see under and follow the noise. If it's blowing you will also be able to feel it by putting your hand nearby, but obviously don't touch it if it's been running more than 30 secs near the engine or a couple of min at the rear.
You'll then know if it's a new section, old section of join that's leaking.
