Question:
I have a 77' 305 chevy motor. For some reason, when I crank it, sometimes I can hear a screaming sound coming from the starter area. Its a brand new starter. I just replaced it because my last starter went out on me. It was doing the screaming sound too. There were no shims installed. This time I installed shims hoping it would solve the problem, but no luck? Im now rebuilding a 84' 305 and I want this one to be right. How many shims am I suppose to use? All? One? Two? Is there a certain way of figuring this out? Please help me out. Thanx!!

has your flywheel been replaced ? If so , its possible to instlallit backwards! The starter will barley catch the flywheel. The
flywheel needs to be offset towards the engine.

Can I mod up my mazdaSPEED 3 07' to 1000 Hp?
You might have a bad flywheel or flexplate, Dennis. The only way to check this out it to remove the inspection cover next to the starter. If there are more than two teeth in a row that are damaged than you need to replace the flexplate. Adding or removing shims won't fix this problem. They should be inserted or removed to get the right clearances. If there wasn't a shim to begin with, then one shouldn't be added for the most part. Hope this helps.Your reasons why Eddie Griffin crashed the ferrari Enzo?
The screaming noise could be the starter gear not meshing up with the flywheel, you need to check the engine side of you flywheel for grind marks,if so it needs to be replaced, you need to check the hole flywheel not just the section you can see at the moment. To properly check if you starter needs to be shimmed you need to engage to solenoid only on your starter and see if the gear on the starter is to loose or to tight against the flywheel.I heard that Toyota was going to discontinue the Rav4 is this true.?
if you tried the shims the next thing you can check would be the teeth on the flywheel and make sure that the teeth are not grinding together.if you added shims, you moved the starter farther away from the fly wheel. remove all shims. if it still does the same thing, replace the fly wheel or flex plate.
