Question:
First i had a slight leak, but it was not constant, it would drip a few drops every now and then, but i could not see where it was coming from. Over a several week period the leak got worse, and the heater wouldn,t work properly even though the engine was overheating. The heater worked sometimes and intermitently. I always made sure to add antifreeze (dex-cool), so it wouldn't get too low. Then I flushed the cooling system real good and made sure the thermastat was working. The heater started working a little better but then got worse and the leak has gotten much worse. Now I checked the oil and there is white goo all over the fill cap. coolant in the engine. yippeee. Please help me diagnose the true problems. Thanks

1st off were is the leak? it could be anything from a pin hole in the radiator to a hose to a blown head gasket. 2nd a little white goo on the oil fill cap may be nothing more then condensation. You really need to trace the fluid back to where your leak is then go from there. Otherwise you could waste allot of time and money on stuff you don't need.I have a 2006 jeep wrangler x will 2001 jeep wrangler wheels fit my jeep?

The only way to tell is get a good light out and take a look, check your water pump, hoses, heater core, radiator and around the intake manifold. Look for streaks of orangy color where the dex cool has ran down and evaporated away. Your heater was most likely working on and off because your coolant was too low most of the time. How did you determine the thermostat was working, and how does that effect your original leak, not at all as I can best understand. The white goo in the oil cap is most likely normal condensation, the real test is what does the oil look like on the dipstick or if you drain it. Is it just oil or is it white and milky. Does the exhaust smell sweet or blow white smoke, signs of head gasket failure. Is driving a standard car really that difficult?
Your best bet may be to use a cooling system pressure tester and get under the van and look closely for where the coolant is running out.

My brother just went through all of this with his 2001 Chevy Venture. The shop fixed everything they could on it, ducking the major issue the whole time (warranty work is impossible to get done correctly). Anyway, it ended up being the head gasket. I'd recommend getting a pressure test done, and check for seeping of fluid near the intake manifold. A reputable mechanic should be able to diagnose this for you in about 15 mintues.
