Question:
I have a 98 Taurus and the car has RPM mind of its own. I can start the car and my RPMs will rise to 1800-2600 RPMs, Sometimes that is. This does not happen all the time and a warm/cold engine is not a factor. This problem also happens when I put the car in park. Sometimes it rises and sometimes it does not. I know the RPMs will rise when I put the car in Park because my idle RPMs will be at +/- 1000.and I can fell the cars higher RPMs when breaking and at a stand still. I have no clue what the problem is and hopefully it is a cheap and easy answer. I hope someone will have some ideas for me. Thanks a lot.

It COULD be the IAC valve as the other two posters have already advised, OR you could have a vacuum leak somewhere. If you hear a HISSING sound, then you know it's a vacuum leak causing your condition. Hope this helps.What are the largest tire I can put on my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 4x2 Reg. Cab.?

one of two things going on either an iac valve has gone bad wich is very common or you have a vaccume leak. With the age of the car it could be either.If you have a 24v motor its also common to see the rubber line that goes to the pvc valve break, but that should make the check engine light come on

The air leak IMO is the more stronger possibility as a unregulated air leak depending upon where it is can cause either stalling or the condition you describe more..
I'd also check for binding of the accelerator cable/ binding of the cruise control cable also...
