Question:
In the past few days my 5sp pickup has started to have a loud vibration noise coming from the front end. I can't tell if it's coming from the right or left wheel specifically. It gets louder the faster I go and doesn't change when I brake or put it in neutral, however it does get louder when I turn to the left. It's just this loud humming sound--I keep hearing it and unconsciously reaching down to shift to a higher gear because it sounds like when you're revving the engine too high, even though the RPMs are fine. I raised one of the front wheels off the ground and shook the tire to see if there's any play and didn't feel any, so I don't think it's a wheel bearing (although I didn't try the other side). Any suggestions? Could it be the 4WD (which is automatic, not manual)? Thanks a lot.

Depending on the mileage, you probably have a universal joint going bad. When you turn, you are causing torque to the front axle shafts and this increases the vibration and noise.Kind of expensive to repair! If you take it into a shop... ask for a price to change ALL universal joints "AND" the ball joints. If you can afford it... best do it all at once. Otherwise, you change the universals and then may have to go through most of the same steps to replace ball joints. (If the ball joints check out good - do not replace them at this time)
