I am haveing problems identifying the colour of my 1998 ford escort the code is j7 ford say the colour is cuirass according to the reg number but it is nothing like it. my local paint factors cant identfy it either can any body suggest a reliable way to confirm the exact colour code and name. The best way to describe the colour is silver blue with a purple tint to it i would apreciate any help.

Best way would be to go to your local auto body supply store. Two choices from them.either 1 they will have what is a paint gun, looks like a big over sized toy gun. They can point it at the paint and it will figure out what the paint is and give you a code. You 2, ask them to see their chip book for 1998 Ford and hold it up against your car to find the right chip.

You also might want to check 1997 and 1999 colors as well. Sometimes they change colors during a production year to use up extra paint or cause they ran out early.

But with your code being J7 i'd take it to mean J is the colour and the 7 represents the shade i.e. the dark or lightness of the paint. if you've already got a can mixed to cuirass check the numbers on it, places like halfords etc normally only have a set shade for each paint, so maybe thats why it looks so diferent.
I Cant see it being a cuirass 1st coat with a light grape over coat to add colour as that'd be tricky to get uniform over the car.
If you're really unlucky you may find the cars been resprayed at some point, then you'll never match it !
