I was given a new Alfa Romeo gear knob as a present but can't seem to get the existing one off, any ideas?

there should be a lock nut under it, loosen it, then the knob will screw off.

Yes, most gear knobs on newer cars aren't intended to come off.. Older cars you could screw them off.

Generally they screw on the gear lever. Try turning it counter clockwise gently. If that does not work try to look the underside of the knob to see if there are any screws securing it.

If not, then the knob should have a cap on top. This you can easily check on your new one. The cap should be removable to expose, usually a nut that secure the knob to the lever.
