What you need to do is bring the engine around until the #1 cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke (TDC, top dead center). This will be easiest if you have someone assist you. Pull the #1 spark plug out and have a friend bump the engine over with the starter while you hold your finger over the spark plug hole (don't worry it won't bite you, I promise :) ) When you feel pressure build up and blow your finger off the hole you know you are nearing the top of the compression stroke. Please make sure the ignition is disconnected for this procedure, easiest thing to do is just pull the distributor cap off, you'll need it off anyway to find where #1 is on the distributor.
